Find opportunities for service to the Indy community with Soup’s On food ministry, Kairos prison ministry, or the neighborhood assistance ministry, as well as with national or international missions. Roberts Park has a long history of involvement with meeting the needs of those in the downtown Indianapolis community who need a helping hand, a warm meal or help with transportation. Compassionate urban outreach is an important and ongoing part of our service in the community.
Kairos Prison Ministry
Prison is a dark, hopeless place. Prisoners often live their lives without friends, without family, without knowing love and forgiveness. Then why would more than 30,000 Kairos Prison Ministry volunteers serving in 35 U.S. states and 10 countries, in over 400 men, women and youth correctional facilities choose to enter this world that is filled with guilt and anger?
The answer is simple. The mission of Kairos Prison Ministry is to share the transforming love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ to impact the hearts and lives of incarcerated men, women, youth, and their families to become loving and productive citizens of their communities.
International and USA Missions
Roberts Park has a long history of mission work around the world. In the past six years, members of Roberts Park have twice traveled to Guatemala to volunteer at Mission Guatemala. Plans for a 2018 trip are currently in progress.
Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere. The Roberts Park team has installed eleven high-efficiency stoves, organized the storeroom, built a suspension bridge and slide for the preschool playground, finished building a playground fence, read with preschool children, and spent time playing soccer and doing crafts with the school children in Neuva Esperanza, a community where Mission Guatemala has a lunchtime feeding program.
Roberts Park members also have traveled to Senegal as part an ongoing partnership with the Anti-Poverty Initiative there. This important mission led by Sebastine Ujereh has several facets, including a program to bring safe drinking water to rural villages and another to train urban dwellers to create rooftop gardens. A micro-lending program enables women to bring their business dreams to reality.
The congregation also supports the work of UMCOR, our United Methodist agency that comes to the aid of people in crisis around the world.
